GR86 Saint-Béat-Lez

Choose the GR86 for your hike in the Pyrenees

At the end of July, Ben and I set off for a week on a sporting and cultural trip. Our objective? To discover the GR86, a hiking trail that winds its way through the magnificent landscapes of the Pyrenees. This trail, rich in history and heritage, will reveal hidden treasures and breathtaking panoramas. Along the way, we were lucky enough to discover places like Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, Saint-Béat-Lez and many others, each offering a unique and memorable experience. First and foremost, it’s important to remember that preparing for a tour requires preparation. You have to define the route, the places to sleep, the must-sees beforehand… Clearly, I would never have been able to do it on my own, but with Ben it was child’s play!

Jour 1

plunge into the past
in Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges

Our first stop was at Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges! It was a great day out, with the sun shining! I was immediately seduced by the medieval atmosphere that reigns in this village. As you stroll along its cobbled streets, you may feel as I did that you’ve stepped back in time. The majestic Sainte-Marie Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-see. Ben and I spent many minutes admiring its ornate carvings and panoramic view of the surrounding valley. A visit to the Roman remains also gave us an idea of the past grandeur of this place.

Day 2 :
Following in the footsteps of history in Valcabrère and Barbazan

Just a stone’s throw from Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, we headed for Valcabrère on our second day! We were charmed by its tranquillity and authentic charm. The Saint-Just basilica in Valcabrère is a real gem of Romanesque architecture. I was particularly struck by the beauty of its sculpted capitals, which tell stories that go back centuries.

Continuing our journey, we discovered Barbazan, a picturesque village nestling deep in the mountains. This village is the ideal starting point for exploring the surrounding area. For lunch, we had the pleasure of eating in a restaurant where we could put our rucksacks down and enjoy some local specialities. There’s no better way to recharge your batteries before continuing on the GR86!

Day 3 :
Saint-Béat-Lez, between nature and culture

Saint-Béat-Lez, which we reached on the third day after an invigorating walk, stands out for its cultural richness. Although the village is relatively small, it has an impressive historical heritage. As we wandered around, we discovered marble sculptures scattered all over the place, testifying to the centuries-old tradition of sculpture in the region. Ben particularly enjoyed the Marble Museum, where we learned about the importance of marble in local history.

Jour 4

Nature stop
in Marignac

Marignac, not far from Saint-Béat-Lez, offers an exceptional natural setting. After a long walk along the surrounding paths, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, we enjoyed a peaceful break on the banks of the Garonne, where we had a picnic and listened to the murmur of the water. This moment of relaxation was an opportunity to reconnect with nature, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Day 5: Montréjeau, gateway to the Pyrenees

Finally, our adventure on the GR86 took us to Montréjeau, a lively and welcoming town. We explored its historic centre, where every building tells a story. The Montréjeau market is a veritable explosion of colour and flavour. We enjoyed chatting to the local producers, discovering local produce that we took home as souvenirs.

Day 6: A journey through time and nature

The GR86 is not just a hiking trail, it’s an invitation to explore the history and natural beauty of the Pyrenees. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for new experiences, this route will win you over. Ben and I were enchanted by the diversity of landscapes and the cultural richness we encountered along the way. I was really able to let go, disconnect and get back to basics. It was a holiday close to nature, where you went to bed with the sun, rose with the sun, and enjoyed the view. Every step on the GR86 is a discovery, a new page of history opening up to you. We were touched by the kindness of the local people and the beauty of the landscape, and we hope you’ll feel the same magic during your stay. So pack your hiking boots, your rucksack and set off on an adventure along the GR86, where nature and history are one and the same.
