A week in the heart of the Haut-Garonne Pyrenees

Going away as a couple means creating unique memories. And what better place to do so than in the heart of the Haut-Garonne Pyrenees? Here, nature is an accomplice to your escapades, the picturesque villages transport you back in time and each day becomes a new chapter in a beautiful story for two.

Let yourself be carried away by this week-long adventure, with its mix of mountain walks, cultural discoveries, gourmet delights and moments of relaxation. We tried out this programme and came back with a head full of unforgettable memories.

Jour 1

Immersion in the heart of our heritage

To kick off the week, we’re heading for the major site of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges Valcabrère. This village, listed as one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages, is a marvel to behold. Lucas and I wandered along the cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses, then climbed up to Sainte-Marie cathedral. Seen from below, it’s impressive, but once inside, it’s even more grandiose. The monumental organ and sculpted choir are true works of art.

The legend of the Saint-Bertrand crocodile piqued our curiosity. We even had fun looking for clues by exploring every nook and cranny of the cathedral. We left feeling like we’d cracked a well-kept secret.

In the afternoon, we headed for the village of Saint-Béat-Lez, famous for its white marble, which has adorned many prestigious monuments in France, including the Château de Versailles. A visit to the château took us back in time, with a breathtaking view over the Garonne valley.

Jour 2

Relaxation and well-being in Luchon

After a busy first day, we decided to pamper ourselves a little. We headed for Luchon, the ‘Queen of the Pyrenees’. On the programme? A day in the vaporarium at the Luchon thermal baths, a unique experience in Europe! A natural grotto where hot steam escapes from the walls, enveloping you in a gentle warmth. You can relax, gazing into each other’s eyes, lulled by the silence and soothing steam.

As you emerge, the contrast between the freshness of the air and the warmth of the cave awakens your senses. After this wellness break, we took our seats in the spa park. We took the opportunity to stroll under the tall trees, listen to the birdsong and relax on a bench facing the mountains. A real moment of reconnection for both of us.

In the evening, we enjoyed a romantic dinner at Le Montagnard restaurant. With a view of the mountains, a cosy atmosphere and dishes to delight both the eyes and the taste buds. Special mention must go to the pétéram, a local speciality based on offal that surprised and seduced our taste buds.

Jour 3

Adventure and thrills

A change of pace with a day of 100% sport and adrenalin! Lucas, more intrepid than me, wanted to try rock climbing at Labroquère. As for me, I opted for the tree climbing course at the Pyrénées Hô park. The zip lines perched 60 m above the ground gave me the shivers, but the view of the canopy was well worth it.

In the middle of the day, we embarked on a thrilling experience: rafting down the Garonne. Waterfalls, rapids and splashes… We screamed, laughed and sometimes held our breath!

To round off the day, we went for a mountain bike ride at Le Mourtis. The trails wind through pine forests, with some fun but accessible descents. A perfect activity for the ‘sporty and contemplative’ duo!

Jour 4

A romantic walk in the heart of nature

After the thrills, it was back to nature with a hike to Lac Vert. The trail took us through dense forests and impressive waterfalls. But the highlight was arriving at the edge of Lac Vert, with its crystal-clear, emerald-tinged waters. The place is so peaceful that we stopped for a moment, just to admire the view.

We took the opportunity to have an impromptu picnic with local produce bought at the Halles de Luchon. Cheese, farmhouse bread, local pastries… A simple moment, but one we’ll never forget.

Day 5 :
Gourmet getaway and nature break

Today we’re taking a gourmet tour. After breakfast at Les Halles, head for the Vénasque brewery. Here you can find out how the local beer is made and enjoy a tasting session (in moderation, of course).

In the afternoon, it’s off to the Cité des abeilles in Génos. We even took home a jar of local honey as a souvenir.

Day 6 :
Time travel

We wanted to give meaning to this day by following the paths of freedom in Marignac. This walk enabled us to follow in the footsteps of the Resistance fighters of the Second World War.

It was an experience that was both historic and symbolic, giving us a better understanding of the courage of the men and women who fought for freedom.

Jour 7

Closing the week in style

On our last day, we decided to treat ourselves! A bit of shopping in Luchon, a coffee break on the sunny terrace of a brasserie, then a final stroll along the allée d’Étigny.

Before leaving, we treated ourselves to a special moment at the Thermes de Luchon spa. Duo massages, Jacuzzi and total relaxation to end the week as it had begun: with a sense of well-being and togetherness.

If you’re looking for a destination where nature, adventure, culture and well-being blend harmoniously, the Haut-Garonne Pyrenees are the place for you. This region offers moments of total disconnection in the heart of nature, adventures for two or the whole family, rafting, climbing and mountain biking, moments of well-being in the thermal baths of Luchon, the vaporarium and the spas, authentic gastronomy and a plunge into history and heritage with listed villages and cultural visits.
