On the Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges/Valcabrère Grand Site, the Saint-Just basilica in Valcabrère is a masterpiece of Romanesque art (12th century).
Near the village of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, isolated in the fields, this charming Romanesque church, completed in the 12th century, was built close to one of the necropolises of the ancient Roman town of Lugdunum. As a result, its walls contain many Roman remains, mainly funerary. The church has a fine sculpted portal and a 14th-century square bell tower.
Situated on several routes to Santiago de Compostela (Chemin du Piémont, Via Garona), the Basilica of Saint-Just has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.
If you walk a few hundred metres, don’t miss the viewpoint that takes in the Basilica of Saint-Just and the Cathedral of Sainte-Marie in a single glance.
